Manchester United v PSG Live Commentary & Result, 12/02/2019, UEFA Champions League

26′ Verratti wins another free-kick for the visitors as Pogba catches him a fraction late in a challenge.

25′ Verratti puts himself under pressure by hanging on to the ball for too long on the edge of his own box. Rashford tries to steal the ball, but the Italian draws a foul from the striker.

24′ Rashford and Lingard combine to release the latter into acres of space. He looks for an offload to the left flank for Martial, but the Frenchman fails to control the ball and it travels out for a throw-in.

21′ Both sides are not committing too many men forward at this stage. It has been a reserved start at Old Trafford.

19′ Another booking for the visitors as Draxler is carded for a foul on Herrera.

18′ Kimpembe makes a vital clearing header at the near post to prevent Young’s dangerous cross from reaching three United players in the middle waiting to pounce. He had to make that header.

16′ Pogba makes a lung-bursting run down the right flank and he beats the challenge of Kimpembe with ease. The Frenchman tries to fire a low ball across the face of goal, but Buffon is able to gather and hold amid pressure from Lingard.

14′ PSG work the ball around the red shirts in the United half, but Alves fails to pick out a team-mate in the box with his cross.

13′ United have tried to get at the PSG defence in the early stages of the match, but they’ve lacked rhythm in the final third.

11′ Kimpembe earns the first yellow card of the match as he trips Rashford on the charge.

9′ From the resulting corner Rashford fouls Verratti in the box, allowing the visitors to clear their lines once again.

8′ Rashford tries to catch out Buffon with a strike towards his near post, but the veteran keeper is alert to punch the ball behind for a corner.

6′ WIDE! PSG spread the ball around the edge of the United box before Di Maria takes on the strike, curling his effort just wide of the post. A warning for the hosts.

5′ Lingard makes a run into the final third and releases Rashford. The England man has options in the middle, but he fails to beat Bernat with his pass inside.

3′ PSG are able to clear their lines from the free-kick. A wasted opportunity for the home side in the opening minutes, although this United side is lacking in height outside of their central defenders and Matic.

2′ Lingard has space to surge into after collecting Matic’s offload, but he gets tripped by Marquinhos before he can advance into the final third. United have an early free-kick.

1′ We’re underway at Old Trafford.

There will be a minute of applause before kick-off in memory of Emiliano Sala and Gordon Banks.

No French team has ever beaten Manchester Utd away from home in European competition (D4 L10). In the Champions League, only two French sides have avoided defeat at Old Trafford: Monaco in March 1998 (1-1), Lille in October 2005 (0-0).

PSG have made six changes to their side that beat Bordeaux last time out. Already without Neymar, Tuchel was handed a further blow when Cavani suffered an injury at the weekend. The Uruguayan misses out, leaving Mbappe to lead the line. Di Maria supports the Frenchman in attack. Kehrer, Bernat, Marquinhos and Draxler also come into the team this evening.

United have made five changes from their win over Fulham last time out. Rashford, Lingard, Bailly, Young and Lindelof all come into the fold to start against the French champions. Jones, Dalot, Mata and Lukaku drop to the bench. Chris Smalling misses out altogether.

SUBS: Leandro Paredes, Alphonse Areola, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Layvin Kurzawa, Christopher Nkunku, Moussa Diaby, Colin Dagba.

PSG (4-3-3): Gianluigi Buffon; Thilo Kehrer, Thiago Silva, Presnel Kimpembe, Juan Bernat; Marco Verratti, Marquinhos, Julian Draxler; Dani Alves, Kylian Mbappe, Angel di Maria.

SUBS: Phil Jones, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku, Fred, Diogo Dalot, Sergio Romero.

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-3-3): David de Gea; Ashley Young, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw; Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba; Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial.

Thomas Tuchel is under pressure to end PSG’s cycle of failure in the Champions League. The club have been unable to progress beyond the round-of-16 stage for the last two seasons, losing at the hands of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Tuchel’s predecessor Unai Emery paid the price for failing to reach the latter stages of the competition. Tuchel will be desperate for a positive performance in the first leg, although without Neymar and Edinson Cavani, his team are without firepower in the final third.

Manchester United have enjoyed a resurgence under the tenure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho. The Red Devils have been scoring freely and have moved into the top four of the Premier League after dropping only two points in their last nine games. The club have also advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup, defeating Arsenal on the road in the process. United had the opportunity to avoid a top-ranked team in the round of 16, but their defeat to Valencia in their final group game knocked them behind Juventus into second place. They’ve earned a break playing PSG without Neymar, but they still need a strong performance this evening to have a hope of progressing.

Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Champions League round-of-16 clash between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford.
