Arsenal on alert as Steven Nzonzi eyes summer Roma exit

Soccer News

As per a pair of reports from Calciomercato and the Gazzetta Dello Sport, AS Roma midfielder Steven Nzonzi is eyeing a summer departure from the Serie A giants.

Roma stint

Nzonzi, a 30-year-old deep-lying midfielder equally adept either with the ball at his feet or breaking up the attacks of opposing sides, made the move to Roma from La Liga outfit Sevilla last summer.

The Giallorossi splashed out an initial fee of 26 million Euro to secure the former Blackburn and Stoke standout’s signature, beating off rumoured interest from the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona.

However, despite Nzonzi’s arrival, which came alongside the likes of Javier Pastore, Justin Kluivert, Bryan Cristante and Patrik Schick, having been expected to aid Roma in pushing on to the next level, the capital giants have endured a hugely-underwhelming campaign to this point.

After finishing 3rd in the Serie A table and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, Roma have regressed thus far this season.

Currently sitting 4 points adrift of the Italian top-flight’s top-4, the Giallorossi were thumped 7-1 by Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals in January, before their Champions League last-16 exit at the hands of Porto 2 weeks ago saw Eusebio Di Francesco sacked.

Arsenal switch?

And, as per the aforementioned reports in Italy this afternoon, the surprising struggles of the Roman outfit have seen Nzonzi set his sights firmly on a summer exit from the Stadio Olimpico.

According to Calciomercato:

‘Roma have received no offers from the Premier League as of yet but there are a number of clubs potentially interested in signing the World Cup winner.’

Among the clubs rumoured to be keen on the Frenchman’s signature are Arsenal and Marseille.

Arsenal, who, as outlined above, also expressed an interest in Nzonzi last summer, are thought to maintain a strong interest in coaxing the experienced midfielder to the Emirates come the summer.

Gunners’ boss Unai Emery previously spent time working with Nzonzi, during the 2015-16 campaign at Sevilla.

Calciomercato add that it appears ‘likely’ that the Frenchman will indeed be on the move at the end of the season.
