Ian Wright questions Maurizio Sarri over Callum Hudson-Odoi treatment

Soccer News

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has called into question Callum Hudson-Odoi’s lack of playing time at Chelsea, on the back of the Blues’ youngster’s senior international debut versus the Czech Republic last night.

England 5-0 Czech Republic

Gareth Southgate’s England welcomed the Czech Republic to Wembley, for the Three Lions’ European Championship qualifying opener.

The clash was expected to prove a tricky one for the hosts, but, when all was said and done, England proved far too much for the Czechs, eventually emerging with a convincing 5-0 victory.

Raheem Sterling bagged a hat-trick, with Harry Kane having also been on target before an own-goal from Tomas Kalas rounded out the game’s scoring 5 minutes from time.

Hudson-Odoi makes history

England’s 5th of the night came after Callum Hudson-Odoi, who was introduced off the bench for hat-trick hero Raheem Sterling in the 70th-minute, saw his saved effort deflected home by the unfortunate Kalas.

The 18-year-old’s appearance versus the Czech Republic actually saw Hudson-Odoi break a long-standing English international record, as showcased below:

‘Why isn’t he playing?’

As such, Hudson-Odoi, who has also thoroughly-impressed during limited time on the pitch at club level this season, has since been backed to receive more consistent playing-time at Chelsea, by another former English international.

Speaking on ITV, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright revealed his opinion that the Blues’ teen is ‘ready to go’, before directly questioning why Maurizio Sarri isn’t affording Hudson-Odoi a starring role at Stamford Bridge:

‘When we watched him in the Under-17s when they won the World Cup, he was one of the outstanding players.’

‘I think that listening to Gareth Southgate about he’s ready and how impressive he’s been and he’s got no problem bringing him in, he looks like an international, I thought: ‘That’s a message. That’s a message back saying how is this guy not playing?’.’

‘A message back to Chelsea. A message back to the manager of Chelsea.’

‘You look at him and he’s ready to go. Bayern Munich are showing that he’s ready to go. Why isn’t he playing?’
