Maurizio Sarri’s potential Chelsea exit route to AS Roma

Soccer News

As per a report from the Evening Standard, Serie A giants AS Roma are keen to appoint Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri as their new manager this summer.

Sarri under threat

Italian tactician Sarri’s job is viewed as very much on the line as things stand.

Despite Chelsea having impressed during the early months of the season following Sarri’s appointment in the summer, the Blues have since gone on to endure a hugely-underwhelming run of form of late.

After being eliminated from the FA Cup by Manchester United last month, Chelsea then went on to miss out on their sole remaining chance of securing domestic silverware in the final of the League Cup a week later.

And a dismal streak of league form, particularly away from Stamford Bridge, which culminated in the capital giants being put to the sword at Everton on Sunday evening, has also seen Sarri’s men slip to 6th in the Premier League table.

Sarri to be sacked?

As such, despite the former Napoli boss having been expected to lead Chelsea forward into a new era, reports have been rampant of late that the Blues’ board are taking the possibility of parting ways with Sarri into serious consideration.

In fact, the Express earlier this week went as far as to claim that Chelsea could remove their tactician from his post over the course of the international break.

Roma bound?

And, as per the aforementioned update from the Standard this afternoon, one club keeping a close eye on developments between Sarri and Chelsea are Serie A outfit AS Roma.

The Giallorossi only replaced Eusebio De Francesco with former Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri two weeks ago.

However, Ranieri is viewed as a short-term solution, with his deal set to expire at the end of the season.

In addition, the Italian’s debut on the Roma bench saw the capital giants fall to a 2-1 defeat at minnows SPAL last weekend.

As such, Sarri, who is held in high esteem in his home country, is reportedly being eyed as the ideal summer instillation on the Stadio Olimpico bench.

As per the Standard’s Simon Johnson:

‘Roma president James Pallotta wants a big name to lead the side next term and Sarri is his first choice.’
