Another disappointing case of racism
Manchester United have reacted after defender Ashley Young was racially abused on social media after the Champions League clash with Barcelona.
The Red Devils travelled to the Camp Nou in hope of turning around a one-goal deficit to progress.
Instead, they fell to a 3-0 defeat and were knocked out of the Champions League.
Ashley Young was one of several players who performed poorly but criticism of him took a disappointing turn after the game.
Several users on social media racially abused the Manchester United man.
As a result, Manchester United have now responded to that disgusting abuse.
Man United to take ‘strongest possible action’
In a statement, cited by the Mail, Manchester United claim that will ‘take the strongest possible action we can against them.’
‘Manchester United utterly condemns racist social media comments posted around yesterday’s Champions League fixture,’ the statement read.
‘We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them.
‘There is no place for racism within our game, or in society as a whole, and we are committed to working to make football free from all forms of discrimination.’
This isn’t the only case of racism recently either.
Mohamed Salah was the subject of racist attacks from a group of Chelsea fans last week.
Watford’s Christian Kabasele was also the target of racist abuse on Instagram
Following the attack on Young, Kick It Out have called for Twitter to take ‘serious action’ to stop discrimination.
“Yet another black player, this time Ashley Young, is targeted with racist abuse on social media after tonight’s Champions League game,” they posted on Twitter with screenshots of the abuse.
“Again, we’re left asking Twitter the same question – when will you take serious action to tackle the rampant discrimination on your platform?”
