Premier League giants Chelsea have confirmed that David Luiz has put pen-to-paper on a new contract with the club.

Blues’ veteran

32-year-old central-defender Luiz is currently enjoying his 2nd stint on Chelsea’s books.

After originally making the move to Stamford Bridge from Portuguese outfit Benfica in 2011, Luiz went on to spend 3 years on the books of the Londoners, before surprisingly joining PSG for a then-world-record fee (for a defender) of £50 million.

However, after just 2 seasons in the French capital, Luiz made a return to Chelsea in the summer of 2017, on the back of Antonio Conte’s appointment at Stamford Bridge.

And, following a difficult campaign last time out, during which he managed just 9 Premier League appearances, Maurizio Sarri’s arrival has since seen new life breathed into Luiz’s career.

The ball-playing stopper has acted as a near ever-present in the Blues’ backline throughout the campaign, having started in all but two of his side’s league fixtures.

‘Love this club’

And, as has since been confirmed by Chelsea, Luiz’s performances to this point in the campaign have seen him rewarded with a new contract.

The South American veteran has penned a deal which will see him remain at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2021.

Speaking on the back of his new contract being made official, Luiz explained:

‘I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay. I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player.’

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, meanwhile, added:

‘We are delighted David Luiz will be staying with the club.’

‘He has set the perfect example to those around him throughout the campaign and been a huge influence on and off the pitch.’

‘With the Europa League final still to come, we hope to finish off the season with silverware and David will be central to that success in Baku and beyond.’
