The Students leapfrogged Kaizer Chiefs to the summit of the PSL log following their hard-fought victory over Rise and Shine in Polokwane
Deon Hotto scored the only goal of the game as Bidvest Wits beat Polokwane City 1-0 in a match which was played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.
This was a hard-fought win for the Students considering that Rise and Shine had not lost a league match going into this encounter.
For the Students, this was more of a must-win encounter after suffering a shock 1-0 loss to Baroka last weekend.
Gavin Hunt fielded his strongest possible line-up which included the likes Hotto, Sameehg Doutie, and Carl Lark all cracking the nod.
Rise and Shine left Charlton Mashumba on the bench at the start of the match, and his presence was missed upfront as the visitors easily dealt with their attacks.
Both sides opted to knock the ball around without really threatening each other throughout the first half.
It would seem both sides were playing for a draw as the goalkeepers were barely tested in the first 45 minutes.
The breakthrough came on the stroke of half-time when Hotto fired past George Chigova to make it 1-0 to the Students.
This was Hotto’s second goal of the campaign as he continues to prove vital for the Braamfontein-based side.
Polokwane City needed a much better game plan to find an equaliser in the second half.
However, they often struggled to breach the Wits defence which was marshalled by both Thulani Hlatshwayo and Buhle Mkhwanazi.

The home side eventually introduced Mashumba to try and unsettle the Wits back four, but even then, their midfielders couldn’t get the ball forward fast enough.
Ultimately, the match ended 1-0 in favour of the Students, who now top the log with six points from three league games.
The loss means Polokwane City failed to maintain their 100% start to the campaign while also missing out on sitting top of the PSL log.
